I actually thought that movie did a fair job portraying the book, which is unusual. I understand that the book couldn’t have Lily’s dialogue running all the time and because of that, we miss important and beautiful information. We also miss a lot of symbolism and subtext.
But some scenes in the movie and in the book are really close. Like the scene where everyone is touching Mary’s heart and June is playing Amazing Grace in the background. Lily gets up to touch Mary, June suddenly stops playing, and then Lily faints. The movie tried to follow the book closely which I appreciated.
I also think that they did a really good job casting the movie. All of the actors/actresses really reflected their characters well. I thought Alicia Keys was spot on with June, and Queen Latifah played August wonderfully, and Sophie Okonedo played May just how I pictured her in the books. What do you guys think?
