The Secret Life of Bees and the Color Purple

  1. The previous book I read in class was the Color Purple and I wanted to compare that book with this one. Well first of all, I liked both books immensely. Both were amazing stories, well written , and had a lot to say.

I think some differences are that the narrator is in The Secret Life of bees is a white protagonist and The Color Purple by an African American protagonist. Both books take place at different times from each other, but both are about racism. Bees really emphasizes the love of a mother, while the Color Purple does not.

Similarities. Both are written my females and both books have extensive female characters. Both are written in first person, Purple in the form of letters, and Bees in the form of a journal. Both contain accounts of abuse. Purple, the color, actually makes its way in Bees with purple honey, purple sunsets, and purple clothing being mentioned throughout.

  2. I guess I'll use this space to compare my books, too, since I thought I was a contributor to this blog but I'm not showing up in any of the posts.

I read "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl," as well as this book, "The Secret Life of Bees." I think some obvious differences between the two were that the protagonist of "Incidents" was a black female and the protagonist of "Bees" is a white female. Also, the absence of a mother figure is a theme in "Bees" but in "Incidents," there is clearly a motherly figure in the form of Linda's grandmother.

To compare the two, both novels were written as autobiographies and both cover issues like segregation and severe racism. Although they were written during different time periods, both stories address the prejudices and mistreatment of blacks.
